Gameplay Overview
Star Wars Zero Company is a single-player turn-based tactics game inspired by XCOM, set during the final days of the Clone Wars.
You play as Hawks, a disgraced former Republic officer leading Zero Company — a mercenary outfit operating in the shadows of the galactic conflict. Your squad of four fights grid-based tactical battles while managing a base of operations between missions.
The game blends cinematic storytelling with deep squad customization. Story companions and player-created operatives share the same mechanical rules, including permadeath. Choices on and off the battlefield shape character bonds, combat synergies, and narrative outcomes.
Between missions, you develop The Den — your headquarters on the Ring of Kafrene — deploy informants across the galaxy, run non-combat operations, and manage a strategic cycle that affects enemy faction power.
-
Squad Size
Four operatives per mission — Hawks is mandatory in story missions.
-
Perspective
Third-person turn-based combat with cinematic interludes between actions.
-
Permadeath
Fallen operatives are permanently lost unless playing on a reduced-difficulty mode.
-
Story Tone
Gritty Clone Wars intrigue inspired by Andor, Rogue One, and The Clone Wars animated series.
Combat Systems
Combat follows XCOM-style turn-based rules with a shared Advantage resource that powers class ultimates and squad-wide tactics.
Action Points (AP)
Each operative receives 3 Action Points per turn. Movement and abilities draw from the same AP pool — similar to Fallout or Divinity rather than Baldur's Gate 3's separated movement and attacks.
Multiple abilities can restore AP mid-turn. Hawks can spend a small amount of Advantage once per turn to refresh one AP for any squadmate, enabling combo turns.
Advantage System
The squad shares an Advantage bar earned by attacking and damaging enemies. Advantage fuels class ultimates and special tactical abilities separate from standard AP costs.
Each of the eight standard classes has a unique ultimate requiring a large Advantage spend. Managing when to burn Advantage versus saving it for ultimates is a core tactical decision.
Cover & Flanking
Operatives use cover objects on the battlefield. Flanking exposed enemies increases hit chance and damage. Sharpshooters and Scouts excel at reaching elevated vantage points.
Squad Synergies & Bonds
-
Bond System
Story characters with conflicting backgrounds (e.g., Trick and Luco Bronc from the Umbara campaign) can develop combat synergies through shared missions.
-
Class Combos
Assault grenades can strip enemy cover for Sharpshooters. Medics sustain frontline Heavies while Gunslingers finish weakened targets.
Pre-launch — Combat details based on PC Gamer hands-on preview (March 2026) and Summer Game Fest 2026 gameplay trailer.
Classes & Tier List
Eight standard classes are available to all operatives, plus four exotic classes restricted to specific characters or droids.
Critical sustain for permadeath; keeps frontline operatives alive through long missions.
Consistent high damage from safety; excels with elevation and cover-destruction combos.
Strong opener; grenades enable squad combos and cover denial.
Intel and mobility provide strategic advantage; slightly lower raw damage.
Reliable tank but AP-intensive; best paired with Medic support.
High burst but positioning-dependent; shines as a finisher.
Situational stealth picks; requires map awareness and flanking routes.
Jack-of-all-trades; outperformed by specialists in most preview scenarios.
Standard Classes
-
Assault
Frontline fighter with grenades and cover-destruction abilities. Strong opener for breaking entrenched enemies.
-
Heavy
Tank role with high durability and area suppression. Absorbs damage while the squad repositions.
-

-
Scoundrel
Stealth and flanking specialist with debuff abilities. Excels at eliminating high-value targets.
-

Balanced all-rounder with reliable mid-range output and team buffs.
-

-
Jedi Padawan
Lightsaber combat and Force abilities. Locked to specific story characters.
-

Pre-Launch Tier List

Factions & Enemies
Zero Company faces multiple enemy factions across tactical missions and strategic operations.
Enemy factions gain permanent power upgrades each strategic cycle unless blocked by non-combat operations. You choose which upgrade to mitigate, creating a risk-reward meta layer between missions.
-
Infinite Coil
Primary emerging threat — a cult-like faction threatening the galaxy. Central antagonist force in the campaign.
-
Separatist Droid Army
B1 battle droids, B2 super battle droids, BX commando droids, and Droidekas appear as tactical enemies.
-

501st Legion, 100th Clone Company, and Jedi Generals appear in the narrative. Clone troopers serve as allies and mission context.
-
Underworld Syndicates
Black Sun, Death Watch, Crimson Dawn, Hutt Clan, and Pyke Syndicate symbols appear — likely tied to operations and cosmetic themes.
Base Management & Operations
Between combat missions, manage The Den — your headquarters on the Ring of Kafrene — and run strategic operations across the galaxy.
The Den
Your base features an interactive galaxy map, squad management, and story support characters who remain at headquarters. Upgrade facilities and deploy informants to iconic Clone Wars locations.
Strategic Cycle
Each cycle offers combat missions and non-combat operations. You can run multiple operations per cycle but only one full combat mission, which ends the cycle and advances the story.
Enemy factions receive one of two permanent upgrades each cycle. Operations let you block one upgrade — ignore operations entirely and both upgrades apply.
Galaxy News Feed
A dynamic news feed tracks Clone Wars events across the galaxy, providing context for mission selection and faction relationships.
Pre-launch — Base management details from pcgames.de exclusive preview and PC Gamer hands-on.
Maps & Locations
Missions span iconic Clone Wars locations with grid-based tactical battlefields.
Battlefields feature cover objects, elevation changes, and environmental hazards. Maps are designed for flanking routes, Sharpshooter vantage points, and Scout recon paths.
Additional locations will be confirmed closer to launch. The galaxy map at The Den expands as you progress through the campaign.
